Cher's Son Chaz Bono Marries Shara Blue Mathes

Chaz Bono's got Shara Blue Mathes, and baby, Shara's got Chaz.

After all, Cher's son, whom the singer shared with her late ex-husband Sonny Bono, tied the knot with Shara on March 8 in Los Angeles after nearly a decade together. Their story, however, goes back much further.

"I first met Shara more than 40 years ago when we were just teenagers," Chaz told People in an interview published March 13. "I think it's safe to say that not many grooms ultimately end up marrying the very first girl they ever kissed so many years later."

Indeed, although the 47-year-old and his wife met as teenagers at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, their romance didn't fully blossom until 2017 after they reconnected.

For their nuptials, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel was transformed into a moody wonderland with burgundy and deep purple flowers in red vases adorning the black-carpeted aisle.

For the milestone, Shara—mom to 25-year-old Cooper from a previous relationship—wore an A-Line wedding gown featuring lacy sleeves and a matching scalloped neckline. She completed the look with a veil neatly tucked into her curled black tresses. Her bouquet matched their ceremony's florals with purple orchids and red flowers peppered throughout.

Meanwhile, Chaz wore a classic black tux and a boutonnière that matched his wife's arrangement. As for Cher—also mom to son Elijah Allman, 49, with late ex-husband Gregg Allman—attended in an all-black ensemble.

For Chaz, marrying Shara was like coming home.

"She makes me feel complete knowing she will always be there beside me as partner, my best friend, and the love of my life," the American Horror Story actor told the outlet. "No matter what life brings us, we will always be safer and stronger together … and we are home."

While the couple prefers to keep much of their relationship private, they have shared the occasional tribute online. For instance, Shara couldn't help but praise Chaz as they celebrated his 51st birthday in 2020.

"Thank goodness we get to celebrate today on a light and HOPEFUL note," she wrote on Instagram at the time. "I will do everything I can to fill this next year with love."

And Chaz repaid the favor in 2023 on their sixth anniversary, writing on Instagram, "I'm so grateful to share my life with this amazing woman."

But Chaz and Shara aren't the only celebs who got married this year. Keep reading for all the couples who recently tied the knot.
