Nearly two decades after the first Family Guy spinoff premiered, a second one will join Fox’s lineup.
The network has given a two-season order to Stewie, a show focused on the youngest member of the Griffin family. The series from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and Kirker Butler, a long-time writer and producer on the show, is set to premiere in the 2027-28 season.
Like Family Guy, Stewie will be produced by 20th Television Animation. MacFarlane will continue voicing the lead character. The show is the second spinoff of Family Guy after The Cleveland Show, which ran for four seasons from 2009-13.
“I’d like to thank Fox for this incredible opportunity, and I’m excited to start pretending I’m collaborating closely with them on the show,” said MacFarlane.
Butler added, “I am honored and humbled that Seth, 20th Television Animation and Fox have trusted me with one of the most iconic animated characters in the history of television. I have known Seth for more than two decades, worked with him on half a dozen projects, and I am hopeful this is the one where he finally learns my name.”
The two-season order for Stewie will take it through the 2028-29 season on Fox, which is also when Family Guy’s current four-season order is set to end (the same is true for Fox animated stalwarts Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons and the newly returned American Dad).
Here’s the logline for Stewie: “After getting the boot from his old preschool, Stewie is forced to enroll in a new one that’s not exactly top-of-the-line. It’s attended by a handful of kids he doesn’t know, and a 75-year-old class turtle with a half-cocked theory on just about every subject. Stewie’s miserable, the other kids are miserable, and even the turtle is miserable … until Stewie begins rolling out his trusty array of devices to take them anywhere in space and time, turning every boring day at school into an insane and surreal adventure.”
Butler, whose credits also include MacFarlane’s Peacock series Ted and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, will serve as showrunner on Stewie. He executive produces with MacFarlane and Kara Vallow.
