The Screen Actors Guild's rebranded Actors Awards looked to put an exclamation point on the Oscar race, propelling some favorites and elevating some perceived long-shots during an entertaining ceremony Sunday.
In that latter category was the night's biggest shocker: Michael B. Jordan winning lead film actor for his dual roles as the Smokestack twins in Sinners. Jordan beat the presumptive favorite, Marty Supreme's Timothée Chalamet, in a win that suddenly shakes up the Best Actor Oscar race. Jordan returned to the stage moments later with the entire Sinners cast, which captured the night's biggest award, film ensemble, over a field that included fellow Oscar contenders Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and the film Ryan Coogler's vampire epic hopes to upset at the Academy Awards: One Battle After Another.
On the other hand, the inevitable Jessie Buckley nabbed lead actress for Hamnet, her latest stop in what, if precedent holds, will culminate in a trip to the Academy Award podium in two weeks.
Sean Penn, who skipped the ceremony, got One Battle After Another on the board, scoring for supporting actor a week after he no-showed for this BAFTA win. Penn is now well-positioned to win his third Oscar despite running an apathetic campaign. Amy Madigan, who was present, got a standing ovation as she won her first Actor Award for her supporting turn as the creepy Aunt Gladys in Weapons.
While all those actors celebrated, cast members from another major contender suffered a drubbing for the second weekend a row: Marty Supreme failed to score any Actor Awards days after being blanked at the BAFTAs, putting Chalamet's Oscar run suddenly on shaky ground. Aside from Marty, Frankenstein also went 0-for-3 on the evening.
The Studio swept the television comedy races, stacking wins for comedy ensemble, Seth Rogen for comedy actor, and, in a touching moment, the late Catherine O'Hara for comedy actress. Rogen, accepting on her behalf, paid loving tribute to the performer, who died in January, in a speech that had the audience in tears.
On the drama side, The Pitt won for ensemble and Noah Wyle for drama actor. Other TV winners included Keri Russell (drama actress for The Diplomat), Michelle Williams (limited/movie actress for Dying for Sex), and Owen Cooper (limited/movie actor), beating his Adolescence father, Stephen Graham, since the Actor Awards combine lead and supporting performances in the TV categories.
The first awards of the night, announced on the red carpet, went to Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and The Last of Us for film and TV stunt ensembles, respectively.
With actors constituting the largest voting bloc in the Motion Picture Academy, SAG’s Actor Awards are a key harbinger of the Oscars — but they don’t always move in lockstep. Last year, for example, the two supporting winners, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), notched corresponding Academy Awards, but the lead categories were split: Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Demi Moore (The Substance) triumphed at the then-SAG Awards, but Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Mikey Madison (Anora) ultimately took home Oscars. SAG’s proxy for Best Picture, the ensemble award, is a less reliable predictor, only matching up with the Academy Awards in 15 of 30 years all time. Last year, the guild backed Conclave, while Anora scored the Oscar.
The 32nd Annual Actor Awards streamed on Netflix from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, with Kristen Bell hosting.
