Hulu Orders ‘Lex’ Comedy Pilot from Writer Sean Clements, EP Paul Simms

Hulu has ordered a comedy pilot about a disgraced reality star from Unstable and Workaholics writer-producer Sean Clements and comedy veteran Paul Simms.

The project, called Lex, comes from 20th Television, with Clements and Simms executive producing. It’s the second pilot order Hulu placed on Wednesday; the Disney-owned streamer also ordered a drama called Durango from Y: The Last Man and Animal Kingdom showruner Eliza Clark.

Lex’s title character is a former reality star who, per the show’s logline, “accidentally films a murder in the background of a $20 Cameo video. He finds himself at the center of a global conspiracy — and on the run from powerful forces who want him dead. Using the skills he acquired navigating reality TV’s toxic social dynamics, Lex must fight to not get killed, to expose the truth, and most importantly, to get back on TV.”

The project joins a list of comedies in development at Hulu that includes 1266 from Onyx Collective, C-League from writer Charlie Hall, Group Chat starring La La Anthony and Last Look from Taika Waititi and Jason Kim, among others.

Clements is currently a writer and co-executive producer on season three of Severance at Apple TV. Along with Netflix’s Unstable, starring Rob Lowe, and Comedy Central’s Workaholics, his credits also include Kevin Can F*ck Himself, Ash vs. Evil Dead and Making History. He also co-hosts the Hollywood Handbook podcast with Hayes Davenport. Clements is repped by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels.

Simms is a multiple Emmy nominee who counts FX’s What We Do in the Shadows and Atlanta among his credits, along with NewsRadio (which he created), The Larry Sanders Show and Girls. He is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham.
