The show also has a title, ‘The Hawk,’ named after Ferrell’s character.
The Will Ferrell Sports Comedy Universe will expand in the summer.
Netflix has given a title and a premiere window to Ferrell’s golf comedy. It’s called The Hawk (a change from the all-caps GOLF announced at the time Netflix ordered the series) and will debut sometime during the summer.
As for the plot of The Hawk: If you’ve seen Talladega Nights (or Semi-Pro, or Blades of Glory), you probably have a rough idea of what’s to come. Ferrell plays Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, “2004’s number one golfer” with a personal style (bleached curly hair, a likewise dyed goatee and aggressively colored golf shirt) to match. The show’s logline reads, “Lonnie struggles on the back nine of his career to recapture his magic. His body says retire, but his heart says he’s not done yet. His ex-wife Stacy (Molly Shannon) and his son Lance (Jimmy Tatro), golf’s new golden boy, know he’s through. But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history.”
Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver and David Hornsby also star in the 10-episode season. Feimster plays a caddie; Wilson a rival golfer; Parnell a PGA Tour official; Tarver the influencer fiancée of Tatro’s Lance; and Hornsby a wealthy man who’s now dating Stacy.
Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor executive produce The Hawk via their Gloria Sanchez Productions. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue of T-Street also exec produce, as do Chris Henchy and Harper Steele — both frequent collaborators with Ferrell — and David Gordon Green and Andrew Guest.
