Emanuel Navarrete batters Eduardo 'Sugar' Nunez to unify WBO and IBF titles in Mexican war

Emanuel Navarrete is the next king of Mexico.

The three-division champion beat up and stopped Eduardo "Sugar" Nunez before the start of Round 11 in their all-Mexican clash to unify the WBO and IBF super featherweight titles Saturday night at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The stage proved too big and the lights too bright for Nunez in the biggest fight of his career. Nunez started as the betting favorite in the contest, but he was outclassed by a formidable champion who showed exactly why he has been a titleholder for the better part of seven years.

Nunez spent the first four rounds of the contest on the back foot, attempting to outbox Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs), but he found himself behind in the bout. When that didn't work, Nunez (30-2, 28 KOs) decided to revert to the front-foot, aggressive approach many are used to seeing from him.

Even when Nunez transitioned, though, he looked to be a step behind.

Nunez, 28, focused most of his attacks on Navarrete's body and enjoyed some success, however Navarrete, 31, was happy to meet him on the inside and exchange. Nunez landed some good punches to the midsection, particularly in Round 6, however Navarrete reasserted his dominance in Round 7 by hurting Nunez with a power combination of hooks and uppercuts.

Round 8 was the best of the fight for Nunez. He landed a solid right hand, got the better of the action when they were trading and had success downstairs to end the frame.

Just when Nunez looked to be building some momentum, Navarrete placed himself firmly back on top. The beginning of the end came in Round 9, as Navarrete found consistent success with right hands on Nunez's chin. Nunez's legs were wobbling, while his eye was shutting closed. Nunez quickly found himself in trouble again, courtesy of a left hook at the conclusion of the session.

Blood continued to pour out of Nunez's right eye in Round 10 as he started to take a beating from Navarrete. Even though Nunez was eating a lot of punishment, he would not stop coming forward and letting his hands go. His reward? Power combos from Navarrete.

The ringside doctor inspected Nunez's eye for the second time at the beginning of Round 11 and advised the referee to halt the bout. Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Nunez, had told Nunez's corner in between rounds to stop the contest, but they failed to do so, forcing the doctor to do so instead.

Top Rank, which promotes Navarrete, also represents WBC super featherweight champion O'Shaquie Foster, who faced off with another Matchroom fighter, Ray Ford, Saturday. Navarrete must face his WBO mandatory challenger, Charly Suarez, next. Navarrete and Suarez fought to a controversial no-contest this past May in San Diego, which should've been a TKO win for Suarez because instant replay footage showed that a cut suffered by Navarrete was caused by a punch from Suarez.
