Three things we learned from Arsenal FC win as Gunners show ugly side on pivotal night

A Wednesday night that shifted the title race decisively?

Time will tell, but Arsenal's win over Brighton will be viewed as pivotal if it is red ribbon being placed on the Premier League trophy come May.

There was no control, no composure on the ball, at least until Kai Havertz came on in the second half, and instead Arsenal fell back on a remarkable defensive effort.

It means Arsenal can go to the Etihad Stadium next month, lose, and still win the title.

There are hard-fought wins and there are ugly wins. And then there is whatever this was at the Amex.

Arsenal fought for their lives in defence, spending much of the match in their own half and dealing with an onslaught of Brighton pressure.

The midfield offered no control, the attack no real respite for the first 70 minutes, and yet still the Gunners found a way. At this stage of the season, that is all that matters.

Havertz made a big difference in getting Arsenal up the pitch, but still there were so many opportunities for Brighton to launch balls into the Arsenal box.

When Jurrien Timber lumped the ball up the pitch under no pressure with five minutes of normal time still remaining, Mikel Arteta could only put his head in his hands.

There was a huge roar from the away end at full-time, and an even bigger one a couple of minutes later when news from Manchester filtered through.

City were held by Forest. On paper, this was a gameweek for Arsenal to try and tick off without any damage. Instead, they have landed a major blow.

He stepped up massively, keeping Brighton at bay in the first-half almost by himself.

Gabriel was called into action inside three minutes, getting back on the line to clear Carlos Baleba's dinked effort after David Raya's terrible pass out.

That set the tone for the Brazilian, who slid in brilliantly to block a Kaoru Mitoma shot and carried on from there. In the first-half alone, Gabriel made eight clearances as Brighton spent almost the entire half in Arsenal territory.

Piero Hincapie slotted into centre-back for much of the second-half, with Cristhian Mosquera brought off after just about avoiding a second yellow card, and he was superb as well.

The Colombian reached double figures for clearance and grew in stature as the pressure increased. Gabriel made ten with his head alone. Arsenal's defensive pair were extraordinary.

He wanted the match officials hot on any time-wasting and the fans playing their part in putting pressure on the officials. He got the latter, but Arsenal were not bothered.

The Gunners took their time over near enough every restart, even in the face of howls from the fans and a constant dialogue between Hurzeler and the fourth official.

Mikel Arteta oversaw a big win for Arsenal

Arteta's patience with Hurzeler snapped midway through the half, jabbing his finger angrily in the direction of the Brighton boss after his latest complaint.

When Hurzeler had some words with Hincapie, handing him the ball for a throw-in and telling him to hurry up, the full-back laughed and put his finger to his lips.

It continued in the second-half and it meant Arsenal had to survive seven minutes of stoppage-time. They held their nerve.
