UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall plans to ‘maximize’ his potential after a shocking signing with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn.
Tom Aspinall’s first UFC heavyweight title defense ended in chaos as his fight against Ciryl Gane ended in a no-contest at UFC 321 last year. Aspinall continues to recover from multiple eye injuries suffered in a short-lived bout and recently underwent another surgery on both of his eyes impacted by accidental pokes.
Despite a brutal last few months for Aspinall’s fighting career, the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion received some great news this week as he signed a deal in partnership with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. Aspinall’s deal came to fruition as Hearn and UFC CEO Dana White continue to feud over Zuffa Boxing’s first few events.
While boxing fights could be in Aspinall’s future, the UFC heavyweight champion plans to utilize Hearn strictly from a financial perspective.
Tom Aspinall updates on fighting return after massive deal with Eddie Hearn
In a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Aspinall released his first public remarks since signing with Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
“You probably know already. I’ve signed with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom on a commercial advisory deal,” Aspinall said.
“We’ve done, most of my career, with a small team that I’ve got, so I wanted to add to my value. Eddie’s someone that I’ve known for a fair bit, I trust Eddie, and I want to make as much money and grow commercially as much as possible while I’m fighting.
“Obviously, I’m still recovering [from the eye injuries]. But I’m looking to get back in there as soon as possible. So I want to maximize the time that I’ve got in the sport, grow more commercially, and expand my team a little bit. Make it as big and as powerful as possible.”
Future negotiations between Aspinall and White could become complicated amidst White’s ongoing feud with Hearn.
