Northern Lights May Be Visible in 22 States Tonight as a Solar Storm Hits Earth
Skywatchers across the northern United States have a shot at seeing the aurora borealis overnight Friday into Saturday, as a stream of solar wind and a coronal mass ejection, a cloud of charged particles hurled from the sun, are expected to strike Earth's magnetic field. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a watch for a G2-class geomagnetic storm on Friday night, August 28, easing to G1 conditions on Saturday. At G2 strength, the aurora can dip into view from northern-tier states along the Canadian border, and if activity runs stronger than forecast, the glow could stretch as far south as Oregon or New York.
