Germany's Far-Right AfD Wins a State Election Outright for the First Time, but Falls 3 Seats Short of Governing Alone

Germany crossed a postwar threshold on Sunday. The far-right Alternative for Germany won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8 percent of the vote, according to preliminary official results, more than doubling its 2021 result and finishing 26 points ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats, who collapsed to 17.2 percent. No far-right party has come this close to leading a German state government since World War II.
