Ben Shelton beat the defending champion at the hour when nobody is supposed to be playing tennis. The 23-year-old American closed out Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7) at 3:33 a.m. Wednesday in Arthur Ashe Stadium, finishing a US Open quarterfinal that began Tuesday night and turned into the match of his life. He advances to his second Open semifinal, an all-American clash with Frances Tiafoe on Friday.
