Raleigh gas prices see double-digit increase overnight

As the United States and Israel bombard in an attempt to neutralize that nation's military power, the rise in the price of oil and gas is one of the most noticeable immediate impacts for North Carolina.

What is the average gas price today?

On Friday morning, North Carolina's average price per gallon was $3.123, lower than the national average of $3.320, according to AAA.

In Raleigh, gas prices averaged $3.194 per gallon - a 10 cent increase from the day prior. WRAL reporter Kirstyn Clark saw this morning that the price Exxon and BP at the intersection of Hillsborough and Gorman streets where the prices were up 20 cents from the previous day to $3.39.

The price for crude oil in the United States rose above $90 per barrel on Friday, for the first time in more than two years.

What is driving up the price of gas?

The attacks on Iran are restricting travel, and boats will not be able to pass through the Iranian-controlled Strait of Hormuz. About 20% of the world's oil is shipped through that strait, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

"That uncertainty is what's driving oil prices up," Patrick DeHaan, of Gas Buddy said. "The known would reduce oil prices -- if there becomes clarity -- but it’s the unknown that is stoking fears and oil prices."

NEW YORK (AP) — The average price for a gallon of gasoline jumped 11 cents overnight in the U.S., and some drivers in Europe waited in line to fill their tanks with fuel, as war engulfed the Middle East and shipments of oil and gas were stranded in the Persian Gulf.
