Mario minifigure (and more) coming in 2027

Lego's finally making the Super Mario figures fans have been asking for

Six years after revealing the first batch of Lego Super Mario sets, Nintendo and The Lego Group are finally giving fans what they want: Super Mario minifigures. On Tuesday, March 10 (aka, Mario Day), Nintendo and Lego teased the first of those minis, showing plumber-adventurer extraordinaire Mario emerging from a Warp Pipe in classic minifigure form, albeit with a head that's clearly not the standard cylindrical Lego cranium.

The new line of Lego Super Mario minifigures is slated to debut in 2027, according to the teaser.

The roster of Lego Super Mario figures released thus far has primarily been modeled after the Interactive Lego Mario toys that render Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and friends in squat, blocky form. Those bodies look like two Super Mario Question Blocks stacked on top of each other — certainly not the classic Lego figure shape. Lego and Nintendo have also collaborated on a handful of bigger builds, like the brick-built figure of Mario that comes with the standard Mario Kart vehicle and a pixel-art recreation of Mario and Yoshi.

These minifigures open up a new world of options for Lego Super Mario. And if the leaks from the Bricktap Discord server are accurate, Mario will be joined by a minifigure of Luigi, a "BigFig" version of Bowser, and a minifigure Yoshi whose shell can be removed so that another minifig can ride on its back. In recent years, Lego has released brick-based versions of Wario, Captain Toad, Bowser Jr., and Boo, with dozens of classic Super Mario enemies also molded in brick form.

Nintendo and Lego have also released minifigure versions of characters from Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda, but Mario and friends as minifigures represent uncharted territory for the toy maker.

Earlier today, Nintendo and Lego revealed a new Mario Kart set featuring Luigi and his Mach 8 kart. That deluxe set is up for pre-order now and arrives on April 1.
